As of 21 June, there were 9,024,672 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the world and 469,389 deaths. Despite these numbers, much is still misunderstood or unknown about the virus which has brought regions of the globe to a standstill and placed huge pressure on the global economy.

Despite growing concern that COVID-19 may have a devastating impact in regions with fragile healthcare systems, case numbers in Africa have not escalated at the same exponential rate seen in other parts of the world. As of June 14th, Africa have almost 170,000 confirmed cases, representing just 2% of the world’s total cases.

This past week has seen a global response of outrage and fury to suggestions made by two French scientists that Corona virus vaccine trials should be conducted in Africa. One response to these now infamous comments has been the creation of an online petition calling for no Corona virus vaccine trials in Africa, and it is to this petition that the African Health Organisation wishes to respond.

AHO to eliminate the debilitating Guinea worm parasite by 2030

Dracunculiasis is Latin for “affliction with little dragons.” This parasitic infection, more commonly known as Guinea-worm disease, is contracted when a human drinks water contaminated with copepods (water fleas) that contain worm larvae. AHO plans to eliminate the disease by 2030 after failure by WHO and partners to eliminate it by 2020.
